Training for a cycling holiday in the mountains, part 1: getting started

Riding in the mountains is always fun, but it's even more fun when you feel fitter. One of the best ways to get the most out of your cycling holiday in France is to train smarter in the months beforehand to improve your fitness. It doesn't require a massive time commitment to make a huge difference.

Last year I had to work my way back to fitness having lost it all over the winter while we renovated our guest house. I wrote a diary for Cyclist magazine about the process, covering all aspects of my training and weight loss, working with the top team at trainSharp Coaching, and using the monstrous Hautacam climb to test my progress each month. There's a lot for everyone to take from it, so I'm sharing every instalment here over the coming weeks. This is part one.

If you have any questions about training for your trip to ride in the mountains or a visit to us here in the Pyrenees, please feel free to contact us.
